MAGISTERIAL.

PATEA—YESTEEDAY. (Before J Milroy and H F Christie, Esqs, J.P’s) BREACHES OF BOROUGH BY-LAWS. Alex Monro was charged with a breach of the Borough by-laws by riding a horse

on the footpath in Egmont street on the 9th of July. Defendant did not appear, Sergt Donovan gave evidence as to the offence, ?and stated that defendant had said he would be unable to appear. Fined Is and costs.

James Brophy was charged with carrying a ladder on his shoulder on the footpath in Egmont street on the 10th inst. Defendant admitted the charge. Sergt Donovan stated that the defendant had carried the ladder from the Bank of New Zealand to Mahony’s corner. Defendant had been told he was committing a breach, of the byJaws, but he did not take any notice.

As this was the first case of the kind that had; been brought before the Court,; the Bench decided to inflict a fine of Is and costs.

RB Scott was charged with a similar offence, which ho admitted. Case dismissed.

Edward Mercer for carrying a spado on his shoulder was lined Is and costs.

John Anderson was charged with wheeling a barrow on Stafford and Egmont street footpaths on the 9th of July. Defendant admitted the offence. Constable Crozier said he had cautioned defendant several times before. Fined Is and costs. .

Kipps Baldwin was charged with carrying a.bundle of straw on the footpath in Egmont street on the 9th inst. As defendant had left the footpath when spoken to, the case was dismissed. Sergt Donovan said the reason why he brought up these petty cases was that ho could not stop breaches of the by-laws withouj.Jaking this course.
