f reuter— copyright. J (Keceived July-3, 8.30 p.m.) . LONDON, June 2. In the House ,of Commons to-day -Mr Gladstone, in replying to a question,, announced that the dispatch replying s to the application of the Queensland Government' for the annexation of New Guinea was nearly ready for transmission. The dispatch, the Premier stated, would ; refuse to confirm the action of the Colonial Government, whicff moreover, was null and void in point of law, and unwarranted by the circumstances of th e case. As regards the policy of annexation the Government considered that the Colony was unsuited to hold < such functions, : and annexation by a foreign power was not feared. Mr Gladstone • concluded by stating that it was,, however, intended to strengthen the hands of the Government of Queensland, with regard to the maintenance of a police service in the Australian seas. ’ ' MELBOURNE, This day. Mr Service declines, to accept as final the decision of the Imperial Government s regarding the proposed annexation of the Pacific Islands, and intends to take steps to press the proposal more earnestly. ;, - * maaaaamtiamammaßaxßmsamam
