(PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.) ’ CHRISTCHURCH, May L At the Kaiapoi Court yesterday C. E, Dudley was commi'ted for. trial for, embezzling money belonging to the Harbour Board. Cases are also pending against Dudley for malpractise while acting as Town Clerk. The Press this morning says that the belief in the genuineness of the diamonds discovered by Mr Jacobsen at Alford Forest is gradually gaining ground. A fire broke out in the premises of Mr D. Stranaghan, grocer, 'Victoria Street,■' The building was speedily destroyed. Two shops , adjoined Stranaghan’s, and one was almost ; burnt down. The fire originated in the office, r where a fire had been left. . Stranaghan’s stock is insured in the Standard for £SOO, Mercantile Union £SOO, and £l5O in Colonial. .The estimated loss is £3OO. The buildings are I * owned by Mr Dearsley, and it is unknown if they are insured.
