AUCKLAND SUPREME COURT.
(I’lfiß PUICBS ASSOCIATION.) ' AUCKLAND, This day. The quarterly sessions of the Supreme Court opened to-day. Judge Gillies in his charge to the Grand Jury stated that 37- prisoners were charged with 29 offences. Ho remarked on the increase of crime in the district which he found difficult account for. There was a singular fact that when one or two crimes of a particular character happened in the district others followed. He had no doubt that the sensational accounts in the newspapers had something to do with it. such reports had a pernicious effect on young persons and those of an emotional temperament. Referring to the Hamilton murder case, ho said that—while tho investigating magistrate had done right in committing the prisoners on the evidence—the Grand Jury would have to he satisfied that the evidence was sufficient to warrant them believing prisoners guilty before finding a true bill. They could take no cognisance of any intention to produce further evidence, however serious the case or strong tho suspicion of guilt. 1
