BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The ordinary monthly meeting of the Borough Council w is held last evening. Present ; His Worship 11 1 ■ * Mayor (G. P. Sherwood, Esq.), and Councillors Taplin, Haywood, Aitchison, McCarthy, Adams, Dixon, Gibson, and Mahony, CORRESPONDENCE. A letter was read from Mr Odgers asking that the cutting should be continued the whole length of his hotel, so that he could make all intended improvements at one time. On Cr Dixon’s motion the request was agreed to. Mr Deane, clerk of tire R.M. Court, wrote drawing the attention of the Council to the necessit}' of appointing a Licensing Office under the Act. On the motion of the Mayor, Mr Eyton was appointed. Mr J. E. Key wrote complaining that bis conlract for carting gravel bad been interfered with, and the work given to someone else.—The Engineer explained tliat the contractors for Devon street had ten yards of gravel over, and ho thought same had better he utilised on (he footpaths. He had spoken to the Mayor and some of the Councillors on the subject, and they sanctioned the gravel being spread.—The Mayor suggested that a letter should bo sent 10 Mr Keys explaining that a slight mistake had been made. He thought Mr Keys would he satisfied if the matter were explained, and it was resolved that he should be written to.
A letter was read from Mr Lett, applying for the refund of 15s, rates paid by him in error. Referred to the Rale Collector for information.
Mr McLonghlan applied for an extension of time for contracts 1 and 3, and after some discussion it was agreed to allow one month. Mr Barton wrote on behalf of Mr Wood asking for a reply to his letter of Oct. 6, demanding compensation for damage sustained through water on Ids client’s section. On the Mayor’s motion it was resolved to refer Mr Barton to the Council’s former letter, which stated that the works about to be carried out would remove any nuisance which might exist. THE POUND. Your Committee have to report that after considering the various sites for a public pound, they have made arrangements with Mr Cowern for the use of a portion of s bis sale yards .in Middlesex Street, 'the Council to provide notice beard, books, forms &c and the poundkeeper to receive all fees &c. in payment for his services ; this arrangement to hold good for twelve months from the date of the Pound being gazetted.^ G. F, Sherwood. John Gibson. The report was adopted. inspector’s report, ■ I have to report receiving a complaint against the Slaughter House in the Borough. The Complainant states that when the wind blows in the direction of his house from the slaughter house his family suffer sickness through the foul air coming from that quarter. I have inspected and find that improvements can be made to do away with the nuisance to some extent but drainage is the only effective remedy. There being no Slaughter House Inspector I have thought it my duty to report on this subject. I have collected another dog-tax fee. — R. Jacomb. engineer’s' report. 1. Hadfield and Gloucester Streets contracts,also Lincoln Street contract, have been completed. 2. The contracts in Bedford, Devon, Leicester, and' Dorset Streets are progressing satisfactorily. 3. Several fences, interfering with the formation of streets, have been removed back off the road, to. allow room for batters,and slopes. 4. Public Pound and Valuation Plans are now in hand. These works, as also the pegging out of the works for the contractorsj have kept my staff fully employed. 5. I am getting (racings made of the street levels, to be. placed in a safe or strong room, the plans being constantly required in the office. _ G, I would again urge the advisability of expending £G to £lO on Wood’s Lake in the manner stated in my last report. ,7. The formation of Leicester Street, next Mr Williams’ property, will do a. good deal of damage to his trees and garden, if not, protected, As this is the property of the Council, I would recommend that the trees be protected. The cost will be about £lO.
8. The contractors for Lincoln Street having excavated more gravel than was required to complete their contract, I have had it spread on the most defective parts of the footpaths in Egmont Street. 9. The cost of placing water channels along Egmont Street would be about £IBO.—E. IL Beebe,' Borough Engineer. A discusssion ensued. .On clause 6 the following resolution was passed “ That the Engineer be. authorised to expend £lO in doing away with the stagnant water in Cornwall street on Mr Wood’s section, on Mr Wood foregoing all claims that he may consider he has against the Borough. Clause 7 was struck opt altogether, and the report adopted as amended. COUNCIL CHAMBER. PLANS. The Mayor mentioned that thirteen designs had been received for the Borough offices. He moved—“ That they be referred. to a committee, consisting of Councillors Taplin, Aitchison, Adams, and the mover, to report at next meeting. Carried. ■ ADJOURNMENT. On His Worship’s motion, the meeting then adjourned to Thursday at 7 o’clock, when the Committee will furnish their report. ’
