WAIROA HIGHWAY BOARD.
The monthly meeting of the above Board was held on Saturday, 2nd instant, tho wardens present being- Messrs Johnston, Howie, Aiken, and lon (chairman).
The Treasurer’s balance to date was : General account, £331 4s lOd ; block 8 account, £l4B 4s Id ; block 0 account, £lO.
The Foreman of Works handed in his report, stating that Mr J. Hughes had almost completed his contract on Watkiu’s Hill ; also that W. Hughes was satisfactorily performing his contract on block 9, bush road. Specifications were also prepared for Nicholson’s road, Mornahaki.-
A letter was received from Mr Garrett, authorised surveyor, slating that the plan for road deviations on Okotuku road was completed and forwarded to the chief Surveyor for approval ; also that the surveys of the Kohi road deviation were progressing satisfactorily 7.
A letter was also received from Mr F t P. Fookes, asking the Board for an increase of salary 7 as Secretary and Treasurer, owing to extra work entailed through so much more laud being thrown under the jurisdiction of the Board. On the motion of Mr Aiken, seconded by 7 Mr Howie, it was resolved—“ That tenders be called for Nicholson’s road by next meeting.”
Accounts passed for payment —G. Hutchison, £2 2s ; E. G. Ross, £5 12s ; J. Relling, £3 3s; J. Hughes, £4O,
Tenders received for block 8, ro4d formation—W. Seaton, £56 10s ; J. W. Hughes, 37s Gd per chain : McGrath and Co., 29s 6d per chain. Resolved —“That McGrath and Co.’s tender be accepted. Tenders were received for Johnston and and Keating’s road, but a resolution was passed that this contract stand over, the Board not feeling justified in making the expenditure.
Mr Murray waited on the Board with a petition from owners of land in block 9 contract, asking the Board to apply 7 for a loan under the Roads and. Bridges Construction Act, for the purpose of opening up the road through section 398 to section 17. It was resolved—“That-the Foreman of Works prepare specifications and an estimate of works on block 9 ; road through section 398 to section 17, consisting of bridges, formation, and side cuttings, &c., said formation and cuttings to be 17 feet wide ; estimate to be in by Dec. 16 ; and that a special meeting of the Board be held on that date, at 8 p.m.” Resolved—“ That all rates unpaid by the 20th inst. be sued for. Resolved—“ That the Foreman of Works prepare plans and specifications for bridge over Wairoa stream by next
meeting. Re Mr Hookes’ application it was resolved—“ That Mr Fookes bo paid a bonus of £lO and bis salary as secretary be raised to £2O per annum from February 7, 1883.
It was also resolved—“ That the Foreman of Works have the. necessary, repairs done on Wilson’s hill, cost not-to exceed £6.” The meeting then adjourned. .
