ANOTHER PLUM.

There is another little plum which the Dunedin people, or rather the “ commercial light and intellect” of the place are anxious should drop into their months without delay. We mean the trifling sum of £320,000 voted for a new railway station and the alterations of yards, &c. This railway station is a question which has given the community there much trouble. For about the last five years, if any member of the Government of the day showed his nose in the Southern capital he was pounced upon by a deputation, who told him all about the inconvenience and loss to which the public were put for want of a new station, goods sheds, and half a dozen other things which cost money. We don’t know the precise amount asked for at first, but it has gone on increasing until, as we have said, £320,000 have been voted. Now that there seems to be no probability of anything being added to this sura, the “ commercial intellect V is keen for the spending of it. To our mind the odd £20,000 would be ample to make additions and alterations that would serve for many years, and so allow a large sum to be used for the construction of new lines or the completion of others urgently needed. The gap between Waverley and Hawera is a work of real colonial importance, and should take precedence of new station buildings even in Dunedin. But those who hare the voting power down South think differently.
