To the Burgesses Borough of Patea. Ladies & gentlemen.—i have deemed it advisable to offer myself as a Candidate for the office of Mayor; so that an opportunity of effecting a change may be offered should you feel so disposed. I shall not attempt to write myself a character in order to fit me for the position aimed at, nor will I pledge, if elected, what I can or will do for you, preferring 'to work in the interests of all as circumstances may direct. The scheme* for Borough improvements, now in course of being carried out, will require the most careful attention from the Mayor and Council. If elected my undivided attention will be given lo this scheme in all its details, tvith a view to lessen the present heavy office and engineering expenditure, so that the best possible value may be obtained from the amount of the Loan authorised. Ever since the first Local Body was constituted in this Township, it has been ray lot to occupy a position in one or more of the various public bodies, and the most of you have had an opportunity to judge whether yon consider me worthy of confidence on this occasion. In order that both Candidates may be placed on an equal footing before the public, as regards holding a seat in the Council, and to prevent it being said that your interests would suffer if I continued in that position, should your verdict be given in favor of my opponent, 1 have this day tendered my resignation as a member of the Borough Council.—l remain, Ladies & Gentlemen Yonrs Faithfully, JOHN MILROY. Mayoral Election. TO THE BURGESSES OF PATEA. T ADIES AND GENTLEMEN.— I j I have again the honor to offer myself for the office of Mayor of the Borough. Since I was elected I have endeavoured to fulfil to the best of ray ability the trust you reposed in me, and if I have not been enabled to carry out all that I desired for the good of the place, it has not been for want of having made the effort. The main question at present seems to be that of economy. The first , item is the salary of £IOO voted to the Mayor. That sum can and will be saved, as it was only voted for the first year, to, in a measure, compensate.for the extra work involved in inaugurating the Borough. With regard to the official salaries, I think it would be very unwise at the present juncture to endeavour to cut them down-. It must be borne in mind that the Borough is now committed to the expenditure of a loan of £IO,OOO, and the work cannot be efficiently performed without proper official supervision. That supervision yon cannot have without paying for it. When the work is nearing completion the expenses in that direction may be considerably reduced. 1 have to remind you that whatever the expenses at the present time may be, they have been authorised by the direct vote of the Council. My own proposal for £SOOO was, as you are aware, defeated by a narrow majority. I thought, and still think, that the expenditure of that amount would have been fair and reasonable; and that after the work was accomplished the Borough should have secured a water supply for the town —but it was decided otherwise. With regard to future works authorised out of the £IO,OOO loan, I should, advocate their completion in say two years from the present time. la conclusion 1 trust that you will not be led away by any false notions of economy, which if attempted would only retard the public works of the Borough, and end in a muddle which would be far more costly than a straightforward reasonable expenditure.
