The election for the vacancy in the representation of Preston in the House of Commons took place to-day, and resulted in the return of Mr Tomlinson, who defeated Mr Lanbnoy. The seat for Wigan, which has been vacant owing to the suspension of the writ, is now about to be filled, a fresh writ having been issued. LONDON, Nov. 23. --.Jt viß aiiuuuuceti mac istr ••■■william Robinson, Governor of Western Australia, has been appointed Governor of South Australia vice Sir'W. Jervois. Further intelligence is to hand regarding the cession of the Bay of Tajnrrah to a French traveller named M. Solettet. According to the latest reports, the Egyptian Government objects to the cession, claiming the right to the bey and surrounding country, Nov. 24. The Right Hon. H. 0. E. Childers, Secretary of State for War, has gone to the Continent on a trip for the benefit of his health, which became seriously impeded through overwork. H. R. H. Duke of Edinbrargh is at present suffering from a severe attack of bronchitis. , The debate in the House of Commons on the Right Hon. W. E. Gladstone’s proposed new rules in reference to the business of . the House has been rapidly proceeded with at recent sittings. During the past week seven more of the Premiers resolutions have been passed, and all the rules affecting the procedure .have now been dealt with. Three final resolutions, affecting Standing Committees alone, remain to be discussed. CAIRO, Nov. 23.
It has transpired that, as the trial of Arabi and the other immediate leaders of the late rebellion is likely to be protracted, a commission of inquiry will at once determine which of the other prisoners shall be admitted to bail. AUSTRALIAN. [REUTER —COPYRIGHT.] (Received Nov. 25, 1.20 a.m.) MELBOURNE, Nov. 24. The Australian team arrived here today, and were cordially received. A banquet will be given in their honour on Monday next, at the Town Hall, and on Tuesday a display of fireworks will take place on the ground of the Melbourne Club. . MELBOURNE, Nov 25. The cricket match at Castlemaine between a local twenty-two and the Hon. Ivo Blight’s team was concluded to-day. The visitors in their first innings scored 236, against 136 of their opponents. The latter, in their second innings, when time was called, had put together 22 for the loss of 8 wickets. The match was therefore drawn in favour of the English team the twenty-two having to make 79 runs to save a one innings defeat.
