THE MAORI LAND SCHEME.
The Canterbury Press says of “ The Maori Lands Perpetual Annuities Association, limited “ The obvious objection to all this is that it would be quite impossible for the association to get possession of 10,000,000 acres of Native lands, or even 200,000 acres, at 8s an acre, within any reasonable time. The notion that they could complete their arrangements promptly enough to start off with an annual sale of 2u0,000 acres is simply ridiculous. In the next place there is not the slightest probability of their being able to sell the land, which they buy at Bs, at an immediate profit of 32s an acre t Thirdly, if such an operation were possible, it seems to us to stand to reason that the Natives would be aware of it, and would take particularly good care to secure the whole profit for themselves. In short, the scheme is manifestly based on wildly erroneous data, and a total misconception of the position and surroundings of the question of Native lands.
