KAKARAMEA.

(from our correspondent.) Monday morning. At a meeting held in the Town Hall on Saturday evening the following gentlemen were appointed a Committee to arrange for and carry out the Athletic Sports, mentioned in ray last : Messrs Brodie, Brown, Clover, Mcßae, McKenzie, Hibson, Payne, Pearce, O’Sullivan, Slater, Woods and Whishaw. Mr Payne was elected Treasurer and Secretary. Boxing-day, a day on which most folks delight'in an outing, has been fixed upon for the occasion, and I believe the Association paddock will be selected for the scene of operations. Three or four of the Committee have been appointed to canvass the district for subscriptions and if they are successful, which it is to be hoped they may be, a programme of events will be duly advertised. We ought to take care, as once said a celebrated lawyer, to preserve our national habits, manners, and customs. From the union of these has arisen our national spirit, our love of independence, of justice, and of our country.” These sentences are so truly sensible that they will bear occasional repetition. The minds of all classes of society must be relieved at times from the cares and fatigues of business, and it would be a great pity if British sports should ever lack supporters. Grain crops in this district are, on the whole, looking healthy. Although the acreage may not be much more than that of last year the crops appear to be more equally distributed among the fanners. This will make a greater demand for labor. Oats and linseed will be decidedly in excess of last year. Until recently but few went in for the cultivation of turnips. INow, however, they are cropped to a great extent greatly to the advantage of those who wish to render cattle in a sale able condition in Spring. lam informed by those experienced in agricultural matters that a great deal more attention should be devoted to stack thatching. Neglect of this of late years has occasioned serious loss to many.
