Mr Chavannes’ Belt. —The Wanganui Chronicle has been shown a very fine belt and pouch, manufactured by Messrs Kohn Bros., to the order of Mr Charles Chavannes, who has presented them to be fired for by the various Cavalry corps on the coast from Manaia to Wanganui, and by the Wanganui Naval Brigade. The belt and pouch are of the finest enamelled black leather, and are heavily and tastefully mounted in solid silver. The pouch is ornamented in front with raised and chased fern leaves, between which are the letters “ C.C.,” mounted by a crown, and is attached to the belt by silver leaves and rings. The belt is heavily tipped with silver guards, buckle, slide, and two silver plates for the winner’s names. Above the plates is a shield the full width of the belt, chased and bearing the following inscription : “ Presented by Charles Chavannes, of the Alexandra Cavalry.” All the work is of the finest description. It is believed that a fire destroyed the small house on Mr F. Read’s property, up the river, on Saturday evening. A blaze was noticed about eight o’clock, and the house was not visible from a distance next day. Mr Read was in Patea at the time. Sericulture. —A Canterbury journal says Mr Federli may be said to have fairly established sericulture on the Akaroa Peninsula, as there are now many thousands of mulberry trees planted, and the settlers are taking a lively interest in the movement.
