WAVERLEY.

(From our own Correspondent.) March 11. A cricket match was played oii> Saturday last between tfie Carlyle and* Waverley teams,-when the former beattheir opponents in one innings. There’ are some very promising players among our team, but they are sadly out of practice. It is a pity- that they cannotget the members, together oftener, for' until they do so, they cannot expect to‘ make any show against more energetic teams; The Wairoa Light Horse fell in ( for drill yesterday, and are to have their annual week of it. Drill-Instructor' Carley is here for the occasion. 1 noticed that there were still several of the corps whohave not received uniforms, which isto be regretted,-as two or three wearing plain- clothes-spoils the appearance of the whole troop Several movements woregone through very creditably, but this' system of only having six days drill in the year does not give, recruits a chance of learning anything. A man can hardly' learn-more drill in a week-(ban he is able to*forget in a year, consequently but little improvement can be expected. A system of squad drills, say once a n.dfclv especially for the new hands, would *1 think, prove beneficial. The Little World was exhibited here last night', and Was a source of great amusement,- especially to the youngsters. It is certainly a clever piece of mechanism. Punch' ami Judy were - of course duly : appreciated’.
