HAWERA.

; iIAWERA INSTITUTE MEETING.-' At tlie weekly, meeting of-members of the Hawera Institute, held on Wednesday last, a few rules which were deemed necessary -to- complete the . code, were adopted. An interesting discussion took place on the attitude'.of-the natives, especially in the Waikato district. It was thought that the defence force at present in this district was practically useless in the case of native disturbance, the number of men stationed at Waihi being considered not more-than sufficient to hold that position, and that they would, therefore, be quite unable to afford protection to the surrounding district. It was resolved, that the President communicate with the Premier, as to granting one of the Government cottages as an endowment to the Institute. The subject for next meeting night will be a debate on the Woman’s Rights Question, which will be opened by Mr M. P. King In favour, whilst oppositionists will be headed by Mr Harre. Owing to.lds removal to Normanby, Mr Harre tendered his resignation as secretary, which, on the motion of Mr Hoy, was accepted with regret.

SERVICES. Episcopalian, friends are making extra efforts-in church, matters, and it is said that services will be held fortnightly. As the services do not clash with .either of thfe services'now held; it is believed that, the Rev." Mr Paseht will draw fair congregations Services for the future are to be held-at .8.30 p.m.' A subscription list on behalf .of ther Church funds is now in tpiyn—opiß ; J gentleman .is - : said •to have headed the list in a liberal manner. , . ■ ! • ] Satisfactory arrangements have been come.. to. with the natives, who met to receive money from. Major,. Brown. The latter gent 1 einap put the/‘matter very tclearly, and explained’-tq -the natves that their claim to the land was but. Government were willing to distribute certain sums of money amongst the former owners ol the land. All the natives had to dp.-was to settle amongst themselves what proportion of the amount fairly fell to their respective lots Several meetings have been held during the week, and £I,OOO of the money has been paid over. It is stated, that £SOD has been reserved, with which to purchase sites for fishing villages, A plentiful supply,of fish is needed to keep natives healthy. A suf ficiency of fishing stations have not, hitherto, been reserved, and the.recommendation' of Major Brown, that £SOO of the money should be devoted to securing suitable land for the purpose, met with general favour. Mr W. Williams* of Carlyle, who, from the very early days of the colony has been acquainted with the Native language, and who lately was licensed as a Government Interpreter, appears to find favour with both the natives aud persons desiring to do business with them. He has beeu up here frequently of late on interpreting business. - - .
