CRICKET.

WAIROA V. PATEA. . The third match of the season between the above teams was played on Thursday last, on the cricket ground Carlyle, and terminated in favour of Patea by 62 runs. The weather was anything but pleasant, and indeed from its aspect at 9 a.m., it was thought doubtful whether the Wairoa men would turn iqr, but further doubt on the subject was soon set at rest, by the appearance of the Wavorly team at the time appointed. A start was made about 11.30., and skipper Mason having won the toss, declined to take the field, a proceeding which turned out a mistake, as in the early forenoon the rain made the ground sloppy, and treacherous for fielding, whereas it was comparatively line as the day wore on.

Patca’s innings closed for a total of 74, bat with the exception of; a carefully phiyed innings of 31 by Mackay, no double figures wore accredited. For Wairoa in the first innings Messrs Dudley and Fookes played very steadily, but they did not receive much assistance from the remainder, and all were out for 55. At this stage of the game, an adjournment was made to Haywood’s for lunch, which was well served, and amply done justice to, and then all made thenway to the ground again, Patea to commence with its second innings. Again it turned out that only one was to make a score, and this was certainly done in grand style by Hobson, who ran up 44 by some brilliant hits, and was disposed of only by an excellent piece of wicket-keep-ing" by Fookes. Total second innings, Patea 93. At i.uo. WMmn entered on its second innings, butwith thecxccptioii of Butcher’s score of 20, nothing of note took place, and at 5.27., all were out for 50.
