The Patea Mail. Published Wednesdays and Saturdays SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 25, 1875.

The dissatisfaction occasioned ! 'y the issue of summonses against sheepowuors in tins district for the non-payment of their sheep rates at New Plymouth within the prescribed time appears to be spreading beyond those more immediately interested. Mr McGuire’s pertinacity in the interest of those concerned is certainly to be admired, and wc have but very little doubt that the “ wrong that needs resistance” will be cheerfully conceded by the Government after learning the real position of allairs and the justice of the very reasonable request of the defaulters. As will be seen from the annexed telegrams, Ills Honour Mr Carrington shows every desire to meet the wishes of the settlers who have been vexatious!/ summoned to appear in Taranaki on the 2‘Jth hist: From Mr McGuire to His Honour Filed. A. Carrington. Patea, September 22. Thanks for your prompt reply. Nothing from Deputy Superintendent yet re sheep rales. Settlers and sheepowners thoroughly dissatisfied; expect indignation meetings throughout district, if such a just am! reasonable request is refused. Please telegraph again to Deputy to have vexations proceedings withdrawn and rates paid to agent here. Reply. From His Honour to Mu McGuire Wellington, September 28. I have telegraphed to Deputy Superintendent as follows :Re Patea sheep rates proceedings—l am urged to have same-withdrawn. Please do so at once as before requested by me it possible. Fred. A. Carrington. Superintendent of Taranaki. [Since the above was in type, wc were pi rased to learn from Mr Coweru that he lias been instructed to receive the sheep rates, and that the summonses will be withdrawn under certain conditions which will appear in our advertising columns of next issue.] The ratepayers of the Patea Education District will bo called upon on Monday next, to choose two gentlemen to fill the seats lately created by the Amended Edu cation Ordinance. Happily for us, the four gentlemen nominated on Thursday last, relievo us of that disagreeable task of reviewing their respective qualifications, as wo are of opinion the ratepayers interest will not suffer by whatever two gentlemen have tho honour of being returned.
