The box which was stolen from Captain Daniels’ Hotel a few days ago, has • t last turned up, having been found by some children .in a closet at the back of the schoolhou.se, on Monday morning last. The documents, letters, memos, &c., were stil in the box, which was tied round with flax, but Ibc money was missing. It seems evident that the box must have been placed where it was found only the night before, and so situated as to catch the eyes of the finder, and thereby restore Captain Daniel’s papers, which were of no value to the thief. Wc still hope the oifender may be brought to justice. At a public mecßr.g held on Mon lay at Wairoa, the new name chosen, by a large majority, was Waverly. The nieoimg was well attended.

Wo shall now attempt to give a brief description of it for the benefit of our readers. The brick work is executed in the, best possible manner, with neat close joints in regular courses. Under tho walls solid concrete has been introduced, and the floor of the side lias been formed of a similar composition, with a coating of sand and cement, in equal proportions, well trowelled off. The. heated or damp air ascends by this agency, and consequently tho safe is always kept in a dry and cool condition. Turn arches (forming the roof) have been constructed in four and-a-lia!f brick rings, springing at the height of Tjl't from tho lloor, and showing a rise of 15 indues. Two iron shutters 2ft x lilt have - been fitted in the end of tho safe, tho frames being 2.] angle iron, tho outer shut lor is manufactured of half-inch iron plate and the inner one of j} boiler plate, with hook and eye hinges and two bolls to cadi, fastening from the inside, one of which open inwards and the other outwards. A strong massive iron door has boon attached to the safe, with a largo bronze knob, secured with bolts through (lie wall. A passage lias also been erected between the clerk’s room and the safe.

Tno line upstanding entire horse Welingtoa passed through Carlyle, on Saturday last, on his way to Wairoa, having been purchased by tbs Sonnes Bros, of that place, for £3OO. Wo had the pleasure of inspecting him the other day, and it will ho gratifying to our settlers to learn that (ho the old horse is in the pink of condidition, and looks as well as over. He was stabled at Mr McLean’s, Wavorly Hotel, but wc hear on good authority that he is hound for Wanganui, in which district he is intended to travel during the forthcoming season.
