THE DANISH SCENE

GERMANS’ FEAR OF INVASION

United Pi ess Assn.— Bv jStectri* Telegraob—Copyright. LONDON, Aug. 31.

German fear of an Allied invasion of Denmark is believed to be the major factor determining the application of severe measures against the Danes, says Reuter’s Stockholm correspondent. The German statement that new r easures are necessary to protect the European coastline is the first German admission o* their fea., of an invasion of Denmark.

Observers expect that the Danes wil*. be forbidden to listen to foreign broadcasts. It- is possible that radio sets will be confiscated. Small boats are still escaping iFiom Denmark* to Sweden despite tightening German control over the 20 miles of strait separating Sweden and Denmark. Increasing numbers of German warships and planes are patrolling the channel, ramming, shelling a.nc bombing boats attempting to escape. However, over 500 Danes, mainly members of the Army and Navy with some policemen and civilians, have so far reached 'Sweden. Danes are escaping to Sweden in warships and small sailing ships making the dash through the Gorman blockade under cover of darkness* A small motorboat with 60 officers and soldidrs reached Hogan as last night. A modern minesweeper cached Trolloborg today. A f< rrybo.it from Denmark arrived at Helsingborg but carried no passengers.

The Stockholm newspaper Allehar.da says uniformed soldiers and sailors fron. Denmark will probably b< intern id and civilians will be left free. The Grown Prince Frederick and Princess Ingrid are reported to have been interned in their residence at Amalienborg. Communications between Sweden and Doiir.rrk arc still cut and the airlines from Copenhagen to Berlin and Vienna, have been suspended. Danish circles in London have learned of a number of political arrests i i Denmark including the Conservative Party' chairman (Mr Fibiger), the Parliamentary leader of the Conservative Party The German Nows Agency 7 stated that complete calm prevails. The Denmark police are carrying on their duties and all work has boon resumed. The Danish icvolts have shown the, Nazis that nowhere can they keep control except by' force. Consequently 7 they are committed everywl ere i», their usurped dominions to n.n umelievod strain on their nilit-e-v resources which is now th : r increasingly fatal weakness.
