The Pahiatua Herald PUBLISHED EVERY EVENING TUESDAY, AUGUST 31, 1943. WASTE RECLAMATION.

Appreciable assistance can be -afforded the Dominion’s war effort by those who stay at home in more ways than one. The reclamation of waste materials is a very important and valuable work. But its importance and value are liable in the circumstances to be forgotten. The knowledge that the supply of adequate waste paper—books, magazines, newspapers and cardboard cartons—for pulping and remanufacture in New Zealand saves importations from abroad and consequently releases shipping space for initial war materials is important. Realisation of _ the fact that ninety ]or cent, of the world’s natural rubber resources is m the bands of the enemy, emphasises the need for scrap rubber as raw material for war production in the Dominion. Japan gave hs a lead in the direction of the conservation of scrap netals. Almost too late we appreciated the urgency of collecting the valuable waste metallic substances for reduction to a molten state prior to re-manufacture in essential war materials. The saving of waste is a national need, and a further incentive, if such were necessary, is the swelling ol the district s patriotic funds by the proceeds of the sale of the retrieved substances. Regular saving of paper, rubber aud metals is the only method of assisting ,n fulfilling the obligations to keep up the supplies of war materials It is impossible to send collectors to the country districts to call at each and every home. Thus, provision of receptacles for the deposit of the inquired materials in the home will make their collection a habit. And the formation of a habit will ensure the fulfilment of a national need by the residents of this district.
