SOCIAL NEWS. Tlie “Herald” proposes to feature a column of particular interest to women in Pahiatua and in every part of the extensive district in which this paper circulates. Contributions of social items, recipes, hints and other matters of interest to womenfolk are invited. This column will be published on Wednesdays and Saturdays. PERSONALS. Mrs R. Hollis has returned to Pongaroa from a visit to Wellington. Mrs P. R. Kent returned to POll- - after visiting relatives and friends in New Plymouth. Mrs J. Curtin, of Christchurch, is spending a vacation with her daughter, Mrs G. Gregory, of Mangahao. Cpl. S- Matthews, Mrs Matthews and small daughter, of Auckland, are spending a holiday with Mr alid Mrs P. J. Matthews. ENGAGEMENT. Mr and Mrs D. McMinn, Liverpool Street, Wanganui (late of Pahiatua) wish to announce the engagement of their eldest daughter, Janet Ida Mary (Mary) to Dvr. David Allwyn Davenport, second son of Mr and Mrs W. R. Davenpot, Ruawhata. TRIED RECIPES. FRUIT CAKE (N<> Eggs). This is a lovely rich cake, but ] t must be kept fo a week without cutting. lllb flour. II cups sugar. 2 teaspoon (heaped) baking powder fib butter. 4 large tablespoons golden syrup. 21b mixed fruit. f cup hot water. Beat butter .and sugar to a cream, add golden syrup, hot water, then flour, baking powder, and lastly fruit. Make in moderate oven for three hours.

ECONOMY CAKE (Eggless). ll tablespoons butter and lard mixed 1 cup brown sugar. 1 teaspoon cinnamon. i teaspoon salt. 1 cup cold water. Boil together 15 minutes. Let cool and add II cups £Lou r (sifted) with I teaspoon soda. Bake in moderate oven 30 to 40 minutes. RED CROSS TOMATOES. Take a round tomato or as many as will be required for the meal, cut a thin slice off the top with a sharp knife. Hollow out sufficient, of the tomato t 0 receive an egg. Melt a little dripping in pan, and when smoking hot put in tomatoes. Place on© tablespoon of fat on egg in tho tomato to set it, cook about one minute, then place on hot toast. Make a cross out of the piece already cut off top of tomato and plane on each tomato and serve. BAKED TOMATOES. This is one of tli© easiest and tastiest ways of serving tomatoes- - with either friend, giilled o r roasted meat of any kind. Halve the tomatoes horizontally place in buttered baking dish, season with pepper ana salt, put a walnut of butter on each, and sprinkle with chopped parsley. A drop of vinegar on each half adds to the flavour. Bake in hot oven lor 15 or 20 minutes according to size. BABY WOOL SHORTAGE. The shortage of baby wool and cot blankets was referred to by Mrs Grigg (Opposition, Mid-Canterbury , in notice of question to the Minister of Supply, Mr Sullivan, in the House yesterday. She asked that steps be taken to rectify th© position. In a note to her question Mrs Grigg said that a recent survey by the Plunket Society disclosed that materials for baby clothes were almost unobtainable throughout New Zealand. Before th© House adjourned the Minister was given leave to reply to the question. He- said that New Zealand had to rely on importations for the bulk of its baby wool, and that it had been possible to secure a reasonable quota from the United Kingdom. Due to shipping difficulties, however, supplies had not com© forward as expected. A cable message was being dispatched to the High Commissioner in London asking him to do everything possible to have the full quota shipped with the minimum possible delay. His recent announcement concerning considerably increased production of civiban blankets this year related to cot blankets as well. Actually cot blankets were now coming on to the market aJid should be available in increasing quantities very shortly.
