QUOTA EXCEEDED

DISTRICT’S WONDERFUL EFFORT OVER £3,400 IN ONE WEEK POSSIBLY A N.Z. RECORD. The completion of the Pahiatua 1943 Patriotic Appeal by Saturday night after one week’s collecting must be close to a New Zealand record and reflects great credit on the Patriotic Society, the Entertainers anr the general public. Up to Friday night £1235 had been publicly acknowledged and it was anticipated that, as the Secretary, Mr J. Hutton had still several returns to complete and there was every indication of a large sum accruing from the Gala Day function, the quota of £3,400 would be in sight before long. However, the large crowd which assembled at the Drill Hal) on Saturday night—many ot them non-dancers who were present to hear the result—wer e moved to enthusiasm when Mr A. G. Hogg announced that Pahiatua had exceeded the sum required.

Gloriously sunny weather attracted some two to three thousand people to Carnival Park and Rugby Park where a real carnival spirit prevailed and where the Entertainers provided a programme well worthy of an organisation which has earned a reputation for its many successes in the collection of funds for patriotic purposes.

At the Drill Hall at 10.30 p.m. Mr Hogg thanked all present for their support and advised his audience that the quota had been exceeded. Prolonged applause greeted the announcement and further enthusiasm was displayed when it was made known that no less than £1234 had resulted from the Gala Day Carnival that dayr- Mr Hogg conveyed the thanks of all to the Manawatu Pipe Band and the competitors who had come from beyond the district.

Mr J. Hutton said that he w is very pleased to advise that tjie appeal had been completed and lie thought it was a reflection of the desire ot the people of the district to do their best by the boys overseas who were prepared to give their all.

Mr A. W. Bisset extended a welcome to the American servicemen present and he congratulated the Patriotic Entertainers on their ochievement that day. Mr Bisset said that the men who went overseas in the early days of the war had fought with their backs to the wall and it was comforting to know that our men were now in a better posi iion with victory in sight. Mr Bisset extended a welcome to P;e. Cavanagh and Pte. Bell (in his absence) who had recently returned from Fiji. He also took the opportunity of conveying all s°od wishes to several soldiers of the district who will be returningio camp in the near future.

Mr W. A. Carthew asked Mr Judd to make, the customary district presentation to the departing men. Mr Judd thanked all concerned with the Pahiatua appeal. He felt that it was indeed gratifying to know the result of the campaign. Mr Judd then handed a wallet to each of the following: Privates Checkley. Chisnall, Cosford and Corkill. He wished the men the best of health, a safe journey and an early return to pahiatua. Private Billingtorr of Hukanui, was referred to by Mr Judd who conveyed the best wishes of al! to the Hukanui man.
