HANGED HIMSELF
AGED MAORI AND ANCIENT CUSTOM Electric Telegraph—Pi ess Association WHANGAREI, Dec. 21. Said to have acted in accordance with an ancient Maori custom, Maki Prihi, ,an aged chief of Takahiwai, .hanged himself from a puriri tree in the dense bush not far from Jiis home. Deceased was seen to leave the settlement riding a horse with rope reins in the direction of the bush. Late in the day the horse returned minus the rider and the bridle. A search was made for the old man who. it was feared, had emulated the custom of the old Maori chiefs in years gone by whereby an ageing man would go into the bush ;nd tie himself to a puriri tree.. The whole neighbourhood was combed by farmers and the Home Guard this morning and the body was found suspended l>y the rope which had been used as reins. Several years ago deceased’s mother, the. famous chieftain ess Pouhou, .at the age of 112 disappeared for 30 hours and was an exhausted lying in th© undergrowth. She died shortly afterwards. Large numbers of Maoris are assembling at Takahiwai where will bo held one of the biggest tangis in the district
