Particulars of a great sweep over northern France are given in a communique from the Air Ministry and the United States Army headquarters which states that a strong formation of American bombers attacked targets in northern France yesterday. With many squadrons of R.A.F.. American, Dominion and Allied fighters escorting and supporting them, the Flying Fortresses bombed an air-framo factory at Meaulte and an airfield at St. Omer. Bostons bombed the docks at Lo Havre. N one of the bombers is missing Eighteen enemy aircraft wore destroyed, 13 of them by the Fortress crews. Six escorting fighters are missing, but on e pilot i s safe. Four hundred fighters accompanied the bombers, a later message states. The raid covered a 160 mile front, ranging from Le Havre down to Niouport, just west of Ostend. At the deepest point the fighters penetrated 150 miles with bombers to Meaulte. Other Fortresses raided the German fighter base at St. Omer and the Longuencess aerodrome.
