This is not confirmed in London. The Rome radio announced that Axis troops had captured the harbour and town. The latest British report admitted that the position of the entire fortress was precarious following an assault in great strength by Rommel’s forces which had breached the perimeter defences on a wide front Notwithstanding most determined resistance the enemy succeeded in occupying a considerable area inside the perimeter defences.
