OUTPUT OF PRAMS
CRISIS FACING MOTHERS When the present supply of baby carriages is exhausted mothers in Taranaki, in common with those throughout New Zealand, may be faced with a crisis that will force them either to carry their babies or to invent new means of baby transport. Du© to the calling up of men for service, th© diverting of pram factory workers to essential industries, and a shortage of materials, New Zealand’s manufacture of baby carriages has been reduced to a very low figure. Because of a shortage of cane, the bulk of which used to be imported from Hongkong, prams in future will have wooden frames, covered with a layer of c-ane. A shortage of shaping cane prohibits th© making of cane hoods and Plunket models, which will be replaced by leathercloth hoods. Storm covers, too, are no longer able to be supplied. The present shortage of rubber is also responsible for a change in pram design. Rubber grips on handles wilj be replaced by chromium plat© bars, and already there are many prams to be seen with small disc wheels instead of the former rubber-tyred type.
