BOROUGH COUNCIL MEETS
FINANCES DEMAND CAUTION
PROCEEDING WITH LOAN PROPOSALS.
The monthly meeting of the Pahiatua Borough Council was held last night when the Mayor, Mr S. K. Siddells, presided, and there were present Crs. S. J. Judd, W. Hail Watson, W. A. Carthew, A. Mills T. W. Watts, J. M. Sandman, J. W. Greaves, J. W. Sturton, W. T. Brown, the Town Clerk (Mr L. D. Lovelock), and the Overseer (Mr G. Ancell).
The following correspondence was dealt with:— National Service Department advised that in connection with the proportion of wages paid by tlio Council to No. 13 Scheme workers, in order to meet the terms of the award the Department was prepared to pay 2s 6d per week extra for each man and £2O towards arrears of wages.
The Mayor and Councillors were thanked by the Patriotic Entertainers for their assistance in the organising of functions during the past 18 months.
The Mayor considered the boot was on the other foot and wished the Entertainers the success in the future they had received in the past.
Advice was received from the Masterton County Council that the basis of allocation of heavy traffic fees was: Borough. 25 per cent.; Counties, 75 per cent.
The Hospital Board advised that 4 per cent, would be added to levies 14 days overdue. The Town Clerk stated the Borough Levy was paid up-to-date.
An application from Mrs C. Beech for a sewer connection in her property was referred to the Water and Drainage Committee. The renewal of a drainlayer s license to W. H. Butcher was granted.
£2 2s was voted to the Plunket Society, shortage of funds being the reason for the reduction. The following notices of sales were received: W. F. Rouse to \ a!. Mm. Nation. Est. Edmond Stick to Mrs June Waldman Mary Cittadini to Wm. Nagel, and Est. Patrick Cloherty to W. D. C. Crewe. i A report from the Committee s 1 up to deal with the hire of the Foresters’ Hall for E.P.S. purposes was received and it stated that satisfactory arrangements had been finalised. BOROUGH FINANCES. The treasurer's statement showed that the receipts to date totalled £3.756 7s Id and expenditure £4.074 6s 3d. Cr. Carthew considered the financial position was more or less alarming through the non-inclusion of several la-rge amounts in the Estimates. The position is that the Council will have to cut down on the Estimates. We are allowed to havo a debit at the end of the year equal to the amount of outstanding rates. The rates are usually paid up to within £250, which doesn’t leave much for the Council to work on. If the Councillors appreciate fully the position then there would be no cause for alarm. Cr. Sturton considered that when the half-yearly balance was pn sonted the whole Council could redraft the work to be done in future, and that no trouble should lv antieipat ed. It was decided to advertise the proposed Loan Proposals as required by the Loans Board. GENERAL.
Cr. Hall Watson drew attention to a hedge at the approach to the Railway Station that obstructed the view of the traffic. It was very dangerous and he moved that the attention of the Highways Board be drawn to
