PAHIATUA GOLF CLUB

LAST SATURDAY S BOGEY COM* ETltljrt NOTES BV “NIBLICK.” The honours tor last Saturday bogey competition went to S. KSiddells, who finished with a score of 1 down. He played right to his handicap with a gross score ot 83-11 net 72. A meritorious performance was a win against bogey at t home hole where he carded a 3. When he is on his game plays most attractive golf and is quite capable of breaking 80. Like the rest of us, however, he can go right off his game and last season, he very seldom produced his best form. 1 hope he maintains his present form for the balance of this season.

Geoff Swainson. who has been playing consistently all the season, was also in the picture with a score ol 2 down. Geoff is now playing off the 7 mark and he did the outward journey in 39, which is very good going.

The best score from the juniors was that of F. Buckingham, who was also 2 down. He has also been playing consistently and should reduce his handicap considerably before the close ot the season.

The weather was perfect for golf on Saturday but the previous wet weather has had its effect on the course and the tees are inclined to he greasy. The limestone tees have been built up again and although they are not atractive to play from, it is useful to have them when the grass tees become too slippery.

The greens are getting a little bare now owing to the lack of growth and the nefarious work of the grass grubs. The grass grub is very difficult to check and I believe that the only chemicals that would be effective are now almost unprocurable. It must be* disappoint lug for the greenkeeper. who has done really good work with our greens. I still maintain that our No. 7 is too long for most of our lady players to reach the green with their tee shots, especially when the westerly is blowing. It Would be an easy matter to make another tee for the ladies oil the edge of the terrace. The ladies’ committee should make representations about it. DAY CUP MATCHES. The* Day Cup matches are making good progress and quite a number of games have been played already. Last Saturday several of the ioutcl were made up of players in the same* section and three matches for the Day Cup competition were thus played simultaneously. The game® will soon be got off as this method is continued. A start has also been made in playing off the four-ball matches. This is being run as a knock-out competition this season and it will be interesting to see if the* new arrangement is a success. VISIT OF HORXABROOK. Advice has been received by the club's secretary (.Mr W. Hall Watson ) that John Hornabrook has consented to visit Pahiatua on Sunday. July 7th. He will play a match with the Palnafiia club’s three top players. best ball, and spectators will be invited to iollow the game. A charge will be made for attendance at the match and the proceeds will he devoted to Red Cross funds.
