COLLECTION OF RATES
IMPROVEMENT ON LAST YEAR. The Town Clerk* (Mr L. D \ ovelock) presented the following rates collection statement to the meeting of the Borough Council on Monday night: "Current rates, 1938-39; Consolidated rate, struck £5294 19s Od. collected £SIBO 9s Kid, percentage of collection 97.85, current rates outstanding £ll4 9s 8d: fire rate, struck £452 18s 3d, collected £443 14s 7d. percentage of collection 98.02, current rates outstanding £9 3s 8d; totals, struck £5747 17s 9d, collected £5624 -Is sd. percentage of collection 97.87, current rates outstanding £123 13s 4d. Previous year. 193738 : Consolidated rate, struck £4140 4s 4d. collected £4066 0s sd, percentage of collection 98.3. current rates outstanding £74 3s lid. "Outstanding rates: 1938-39 year, outstanding beginning of year £307 3s lid, collected during year £123 15s 2d, percentage of collection 45.5, outstanding at the end of year £lB3 8s 9d: 1937-38 year v outstanding beginning of year £341 Is lid, collected during year £lO7 Is lid, percentage of collection 31.37, outstanding at the end of year £234.’
Commenting on the increase over last year’s percentage of arrears collected (from 31.37 to 45.5 per cent.), the Town Clerk said that this was very satisfactory, especially in view of the higher rate struck. As far as could be seen at present, he added, they would have at the end of the moii th a small credit in most accounts, and of about £IOO in the general account.
