THE “PREFECT’’ SALOON. Jt has been said that nowadays a motorist buying a new car. once he has decided upon the size, makes his final choice on appearance alone. Even it this were so, the new Ford ■ 'Prefect ’ ten would be a best-seller, for its clean lines and generally distinctive “big-car’’ appearance place it at once in the front rank of the light-car class. And it is not only in appearance that the “Prefect’’ scores. There is also big-car comfort and convenience in unusual spaciousness of the body —ample room for four adults, a low floor without the inconvenience of foot-wells, and wide doors for easy entrance. (’omfort is further assured by the “Centrepoise” system of weight distribution and deep, soltly- • prung seating.
Ease and simplicity of driving is the keynote of the "Prefect.” There is exceptionally light steering, smooth clutch operation, the certainty of Ford synchonised gear changing, while the braking system, claimed to be the finest employed on any car of this size, is of the fully-
compensated, self-energised type and provides smooth, progressive power with extremely light pedal pressure. The engine, the heart of the car, embodies over 30 years of Ford research devoted to the development of engines needing little adjustment, smooth and silent in operation, and assuring years of economical, trouble-free use. Its features include a three-bearing crankshaft, statically and dynamically balanced, mirrorfinished cylinder walls, aluminiumalloy split-skirt type pistons, pres-sure-feed lubrication with oil-duct case integral in the cylinder block, down-draught carburettor and automatic ignition control. With such a combination of engineering skill, comfort and economy in operation, and with quality an. outstanding feature, the new Ford ten, which is being demonstrated by Watts and Lawry’s garage, takes its place at once in the front rank of the 1939 models.
