AKITIO COUNTY COUNCIL

WORK DONE DURING MONTH. THE ENGINEER’S REPORT. The engineer (Mr A. Maylin Theed) reported to Monday's meeting of the Akitio County Council on the work done during the period ended February 10th as follows: Strong gales for approximately half the period caused delay and | some damage. Pongaroa—Eketahuna Highway : Metal was raked in throughout and 2i £ cubic yards of Akaroa chips were spread. Large culvert • near three miles was lifted and relaid on new line to permit filling of bend. Rock amounting to 14 cubic yards was used to even up surface near township. Pongaroa—Weber Highway: Grader trimmed surface to seven miles, and repair metalling was continued. 50 cubic yards ex Akaroa and 200 cubic yards ex Akitio River being delivered for the month. Widening was in hand on 7-S mile section. Pongaroa Palliatua* Highway : Two small culverts were replaced with pipes and some widening done. Surface was trimmed with grader, and 22£ cubic yards of Akaroa metal were delivered. Delivery of shingle from Makuri will now be commenced. Riinu Highway: Tables were attended to and arrangements have been made for delivery of repair metal on upper section. Pongaroa—Akitio Highway : Large culvert near 10£ miles was re-located and lengthened, and straightening of road is in hand. Two small culverts were lengthened and one replaced with pipes. Widening was continued in various places, and deviation at Beach Hill slip was completed. Stone amounting to 100 cubic yards has been gathered at Akitio to be crushed for repair of sea front section and Beach Hill. Glenora Road: Power grader No. 16 is at present cutting grass verges and re-shaping road throughout Some widening was done, and portable crusher lias been set up near Island to crush rock for repair of Akitio end of this road. Pipes (54meh diameter) have been delivered to replace culvert at Assuan washout and remains of old culvert were lemoved to enable work to continue. Soldiers’ and McLeod's Roads: These will now be graded. Some surface-work was done. Akitio River Road: Grading was completed and bluffs were cleared. Waihi-Akitio Road: Culvert near ' Waione was lifted and replaced with 36-inch pipes to carry flood detritus. Waihi Valley Road: Grader No. 5 and offset completed clearing of tables and trueing surface. Gupwell's /.Jlluff was cleared and 52 cubic yards of rubble delivered on road. One small culvert was replaced with pipes. Towai Road: One culvert was replaced with pipes and two others repaired. North Range Road: Tabling and i general repairs a're in hand. Rising Sun Road : Clearing of slip butts and tables on metalled portion was in hand, and further work done on restoration of flood damage of clay portion. Waipatakaka Road: Grader No. 5 and offset have cut grass verges and re-shaped road throughout. Manuhara Road: Some widening was done and grader outfit has completed trueing up road| Xaituna Road; Repair metal has been quarried and will be delivered as soon as possible. Some widening is required as well as one new culvert. It is suggested that a short section below the residence on the Poole Estate be top-dressed with Akaroa chips as this is particularly slippery in winter. Akaroa Road: Surface-work has been in hand. Huia-lti Road: Some tables were opened and metal trimming done. Range Road: General repairs were in hand. Huia Road: Grader No. 5 has cut grass verges and raked in surface metal. Seven small culverts were put in and considerable widening done. jGraders are now putting rood in’ order for metalling. Waiowaka Road: Bluffs have been cleared, but high winds are causing considerable fretting of papa batters. Contractor has commenced top-dress-ing of metal up to F. West’s. Spur Road: Some growth was cut back. Sugar Loaf Road: One fair-sized culvert was replaced with pipes on new line, and bend is being filled. Restoration of drop-outs was in hand, and some widening done. Marainanga Road: Repair metal amounting to 33 cubic yards ex Spur crusher was spread. Cemetery Road: Tabling was in band, and 17£ cubic yards of rock was delivered for repair. General : Electrification of Council’s buildings is nearly complete, and street lights have been erected in township. Painting of clerk’s and doctor’s residences is practically complete. Posts have been cut ready for renewal of fence round plantation on Rimu Road. Gales damaged the buildings at Akaroa Quarry, 13 sheets of iron from crusher house and conveyor roof being destroyed, also the chimney of the quarters. Contractor for public convenience has his shuttering made and steel bent, but has not yet commenced erection. It is expected that work on Cunningham’s Bridge will be in hand this week. Approval was received for Clark’s Bridge plans, and tenders can now' be called,
