SCRUB FIRES AT TAUPO
HOTEL SAVED BY CHANGE OF WIND FIFTY FEET WALL OF FLAME. Elect.-ic Telegraph—Press Association HASTINGS, Last Night. Fierce fires aided by a high wind swept down this afternoon on the Terraces Hotel at Taupo, causing the guests and staff to pack their belongings and leave hastily. Firefighters assisted by a change of wind averted the danger at the last minute when the fire was within 3C yards of the buildings. A wall of flame fifty feet high made an impressive sight ana the heat caused service cars and other vehicles to seek safety at the lakeside. The Napier service car was held up for three hours waiting tor the names to subside so that the road could be negotiated. Late to-night the hotel appears to be out of danger unless there is a change of wind.
