FIFTY YEARS AGO

NEW COACH STARTS. (From the “Pahiatua Star” of February 12th, 1889). The excitement in connection with the start of Mr Crewe’s opposition coach yesterday did not cease until late in •the day. It reached its height on the return journey from Woodville, when the two Jehus had a regular set-to. Report has it that the old stager was knocked out of time. NEW JUSTICE OF THE PEACE. It is now known for certain that Mr Reese's name will appear in the new list of Justices. Whilst congratulating the district on securing such a deserving man as Mr Reese, we still think it a slur on this community that no notice has been taken of the petition praying for the appointment of Mr John Hughes. TARARUA RANGE ROAD. Mr Murray,* Government surveyor. gives a very favourable account, of the road over the Tararua Range. He has now cut a line to the top of the range, from this side, and says that the grade is only 1 in * 19. Mr Murray starts to-day to take the line down the Palmerston side, and he is now of opinion that the road will come out between Fitzherbert and Linton. As giving some idea of the time in which the journey can b'e done when a track is cut right through. Mr Murray says he can walk from Pahiatua to the top of the range in two hours.
