FOND OF COMPANY

SEA LION SEEKS FRIENDS ON COASTAL STATION.

Electnc Telegraph—Press Association MASTERTON. Last Night.

For the last three weeks a sea lion has been a happy visitor to the beach at Tora, some 30 miles out from Martinborough. It that time_ it has become a great favourite with local residents, shearers and Maoris, all of whom can freely fondle it or even wrestle with it, as many of the Maoris do. It is a large' seaiioi! fully grown, and seems to enjoy humail company so much that when its playful visitors leave, it cries like a baby, plaintively and fearfully. , , , A Alasterton visitor to t-lie beach, who returned yesterday, said that he frequently sat oil its back and played with it for upwards of half an hour. He did not try the vigorous tactics of the Alaoris. but it was obvious that the sea lion really enjoyed . playful fun, however vigorous it might be. The. qeach fronts one of Ridditord s stations managed by Air C. H. AN ilson. At present shearing is in progress there and when the sheep are driven down to the beach preparatory to entering the shearing shed, the sea lion gambols among them. The sheep, however, are afraid of this policing visitor, and additional work so devolves upon the men to keep him away.
