RIVER TRUST WORKERS “ON THEIR BACKS DOWN IN A HOLLOW.” Electric Telegraph—Press Association CHRISTCHURCH. Last Night. A report that 12 men in a gang working in clearing a reserve had been summarily dismissed * fpi loafing,’ 5 was adopted by the Waiiuakariri River Trust at its meeting today. The trust’s engineer. Mr H. W. Harris, supplementing the report, told the meeting that the men were “on their backs, down in a hollow,” when he found them.
The chairman, Mr W. P. Spencer, said he had heard that the men had I men caught playing cards on the job and that when the engineer came along one man had said, “I’ll go alone,” and the engineer had replied: “You’ll all go.”
Mr Harris smilingly denied this version of the story and bis report was adopted. In contrast to tin's paragraph in the report was another praising the successful work, efficiency and conduct of a group of young men who bad completed a difficult job very well. It was decided to write to the placement office praising the work the men had done. Their efficiency drew from Mr Dixon the comment: “These are the men who should be working on farms.” “They would be. if you paid them enough.” retorted Mr C. Morgan Williams. M.P.
