5 WICKETS FOR 634
ENGLAND'S GREAT SCORE SECOND DAYS PLAY IN TEST. United Press Assn.—Bv Electric Telegraph—Copyright. LONDON, August 22. The second day of the fifth Test started at 11.55. The weather was cool and sunny after a series ot showers The crowd, which was larger than Saturday’s, vociferously welcomed Hutton and Leyland. The wicket was apparently unaffected, but the ball was slippery. Hutton received a full toss from Fleetwood-Smith, which he off-drove to the boundary, enabling the partnership to break 323, which w T as previously the record for any wicket for England. Hutton and Leyland were both even more confident than on Saturday and continued to score steadily, the bowlers getting nothing from the wicket. The partnership produced 350 in 345 minutes. Waite replaced O’Reilly at 12.35. Fleetwood-Smith, however, maintained a higli degree of accuracy, despite being handicapped by the wet ball. He almost bowled Leyland with a sharp leg-break, which was the first time to-day that the ball had beaten the bat. Play went on in a drizzle, Fieet-wood-Smitli was so accurate that only 43 were added in an hour. Leyland, with a boundary off Waite, raised 400 in seven hours of which he himself had made 187 and Hutton 179.
O'Reilly returned at 402 and shortly afterwards Leyland was out Hutton drove O'Reilly to mid-off and Hassett, after fumbling, regathered the hall smartly. Leyland railed for a second run and and Bradman dashed in quickly, took the ball on the run and removed the bails—a' clever piece of work, leyland played a watchfu] and solid innings, brightened occasionally by flashing drives. His form was particularly good to-day. He hit 17 fours. Scores • ENGLAND.—First Innings.
