SCHOOL BOXING TOURNEY

THE MATCHINGS FOR SATURDAY OFFICIALS A PRO INT ED. (By “Straight Left”). Everything is in readiness lor the first school tournament ever held in the district; and, incidentally, one of the best evening’s entertainment staged in the town. The tournament is to run entirely by the pupils themselves, and to-day the personnel of the officials was decided at a meeting of the senior scholars. The list of officials for the evening is as follows : Announcer, Jack Beales; seconds, Keith Goer, Trevor Levy, Ted Pratt, Sid Beales; door stewards, Douglas Bicknell and Francis Beaufort; medical and weight steward, Edward Waguer; stewards in charge of seating, Murray Howell, Roy Veale, George Paget, lan Watts, Peter Scandrett, George Burgess, Basil Hermon, Douglas Mitchell; glove stewards, Ron Carrad, Charlie Finlay.

Further donations which have come to hand go to show the extraordinary interest which the tournament has evoked. Never in the history of the sjjrrt in the district has public support been so generous and so widespread. Two beautiful cups—oue to be presented to the gamest loser, and the other to go to the most improved boxer—have been presented by Mr C. Lassen. Mr George Woods (Mangamaire) has donated a guinea, Mr G. H. Hodd 7s 6d, Mr A. J. Fairweather a trophy, and several other donations have -been promised.

And now to the announcement for which everyone—more particularly the juvenile section—has been waiting. After a very prolonged series of bouts at the school the following matchings are finalised. Each bout has been decided upon ability and age, as well as upon weight, so as to ensure the very best contests possible. 1 shall have something to say about the abilities of the various contestants in a day or two, but at present there is space only for the actual bouts. The bouts are arranged in order of weight but not in order of appearance of the contestants; Owen Mitchell, 3st. 41bs, and John Husband, 3st. 41bs; John Kitchen, 3.9, and Strachan Chapman, 4.0; Ken Le Comte, 4.4, and Jack Greaves, 4.4; Bill Douglas, 4.4, and Peter Carbines, 4.4; Arthur Watson, 4.4, and Derek Hodd, 4.4; -Struan Robertson 4.8, and Mervyn Le Comte, 4.9; Gordon Helliwell, 4.8, and Garth Pilkinton, 4.9; Pat Miller, 5.3. and Paul Kershaw, 5.3 ; Edward Watson, 5.3, and Barry Pilkinton, 5.3; Gerald Dolman, 5.5, and Stuart Gunn, 5.5; Jack .Smyth, 5.10. and Donald Bisset, 5.9; Bil] Mills, 5.10, and Norman Revan, 5.10; Ivan Merrie, 4.7, and Wrey Hewitt, 4.8; Sid Beales, 7.10, and Roy Veale. 8.7 ; Douglas Mitchell, 7.10, and Ted Pratt, 6.7; Keith Goer, 8.6, and Francis Beaufort, 9.0; and the heavy-weight bout ‘between Trevor Levy, 8.8, and Douglas Bicknell. 10.0. In addition to this programme, there will be at least one exhibition bout, and probably two. The first will he between Sid Higgins, who is to represent this Association at the New Zealand championships next month., and who will be remembered for a great fight against Joe Collins here recently, and Sefton Walsh, who fought a. number of fights in local rings some years ago and is at present in charge of the school boxers. It is hoped also that Jim Davis wil] he appearing in an exhibition with Jack McCann, Wellington welter-weight champion, if the latter can make the trip. Twenty bouts in one night is certainly cheap entertainment for 2s or Is. In view of tlie fact that a sendoff is being given Mr and Mrs Curtin on Saturday evening, the tournament will be commenced at 7.45 instead of 8 p.m. as advertised, in order to give townspeople an opportunity to attend after the boxing
