SCHOOL BOXING TOURNAMENT
PROMISES TO BE A SUCCESS. (By “Straight Left”). There will be no doubt about the success of next Saturday's tournament from thie point of view of entertainment, nor will there be any doubt about its success from a financial viewpoint, if one can judge by the keen interest which is being taken. Tickets are selling like the proverbial hot cakes, and a capacity house is assured. 1 cannot remember a more-talked-about event in boxing circles since the Reeve-Nicol fight, which drew the biggest crowd ever seen in the Drill Hall. The school tourney will, of course, have a different type of appeal and it appears that there will be a very large percentage of mothers and sisters of the contestants in the audience. The children themselves will see to that. The boxing tourney will be a, red letter day in the lives of the younger ones. One little chap told me that he had had a birthday the other day and I asked what presents he had got. After running through a list, he paused, and then announced proudly: “And Mummy bought me a dressing gown to wear at the boxing.” The matchings for the tournament will be published on next Saturday, the day of the contests. It will b;> appreciated that there is very great difficulty in arranging matches with such a large and varied number of contestants. The children taking part are representative .of every section of the town, and will include th.fi following: Garth Pilkinton, Barry Pi! k inton, Bobby Gill, Ken Le Comte, Mervyn Le Comte, Owen Mitchell, John Husband. Desmond Henderson, Gordon Helliwell, Struan Robertson, StraoKan Chapman, John Kitchen, Richard Siddells, Arthur Watson, Edward Watson, Stuart Gunn, Ivan Merrio, Donald Bfsset, Wroy Batten, Gerald Dolman, Pat Miller, Norman Bevan. Paul Kershaw, Jack Smyth. Bill Douglas, junr., Keith Goer, Ted Pratt, Doug. Bicknell. Sid Beales, Francis Beaufort, Trevor Levy and -Maurice Noble. Those names are not arranged in any order of weight. In addition to the juvenile bouts there will be two exhibition bouts, it. is probable, that Jack McCann, of Wellington, will be coming through to take part in one against an opponent to be selected ; and the other will be 'between Sid Higgins, who put up such n great showing at the last tourney here, and Sefton Walsh, who is coaching the children j for tii*» tournament. A good night’s —no, Hi excellent night's entertainment is assured And all for the \ ery low cost of 2s or Is.
