COMING-OF-AGE PARTY

CELEBRATION AT HAMUA FOR MISS PEGGY RYAN The Hamua Hall was the scene of a delightful coming-of-age party on Thursday evening of last week, given oy Mr. and Airs. W. J. Ryan in honour of their eldest daughter Peggy. Some 200 guests were present, including visitors from Palmerston North, Pahiatua, Eketahuna and Wellington end were received by Airs. Ryan who wore a frock of black velvet. She was assisted by Miss Peggy Ryan wearing pink lane and rainbow net frills. The hall had been attractively decorated with rainbow effect by friends of Aliss Ryan, and, indeed, looked a picture with its multi-coloured stream ers. Dancing was the chief amusement of the occasion and this was keenly enjoyed to music supplied by Messrs iv. Hancock and N. Izett, both of Wellington. Interspersed with dancing were vocal items contributed by Airs. N. Izett and Air. D. Luke and ihese were greatly appreciated as was a haka pertormed by Air. Gordon Smith. The M’s,C. for the evening wire Messrs G. Biddle and R. Gordon. Novelty dances were included in the programme and these were won by Mr. P Humphrey and Miss J. White (Alonte Carlo) and Air. L. Russell and Aliss A. Russell (Lucky Spot). The supper arrangements were in the capable hands of Alesdames W. J. Ryan, Johansen, L. Russell, Alisses Al. Bailey and J. Ryan, and a delicious repast was enjoyed By all. A beaut iful iced birthday cake, with its 21 c ndles, held pride of place and after the candles had been extinguished by Aliss Ryan she cut the cake, each guest receiving a piece. A short toast list was honoured. Air. W. Simpson, who proposed the toast of Aliss Ryan, said that he was pleased to be able to say on behalf of those present, “Many Happy Returns” to a young lady who, through ner cheerful disposition, had gained for herself many good friends, and hoped her future would always be a happy and prosperous one.

Musical honours were then lustily accorded the guest of the evening, alter which Air. R. Gordon suitably replied on her behalf, thanking all present for their gifts and good wishes. The announcement was then made of Aliss Ryan’s engagement to Mr. Ray Gordon by Air. A. Hancock, uncle of Peggy, and this was received with prolongued acclamation. Air. li. J. Smith then proposed the toast of Air. and Airs. W. J. Ryan, who, he said, had, during their long residence in Hamua, had always held the esteem of many friends. Air. Ryan briefly replied* Air. Ryan then presented his daughter with a golden key of the house amid applause Aliss Ryan was the recipient of a arge and varied array of lovely gifts which wer3 on view during the evening. At the conclusion of the party Air. R. Gordon thanked the host and hostess on behalf of those present for ~he pleasant evening. The singing of Auld Lang Syno brought the happy occasion to a close.
