MATCH AGAINST LANCASHIRE

RAIN INTERRUPTED PLAY CENTURY TO HASSETT. United Press Assn.—By Electric i eiegraph—Copvright. LONDON, J une 18. The weather at Manchester was dull early for the match between Lancashire and Australia. The Australian team was: Bradman, Brown, Fingleton, Badcock, Massett, Chipperfiekl, Barnett, Waite, White, Ward and McCormick. O'Reilly was twelfth man. Bradman won the toss and decided to bat on a true and easy wicket. Phillipson and Pollard troubled the early batsmen, the heavy atmosphere enabling the former to swing the ball freely. He failed to tempt the batsmen with out-swingers pitched outside the off stump but Brown flicked a straight one going away and was easily caught at the wicket. Fingleton and Bradman were suffering from sore eyes but they became- more comfortable after half an hour till Nutter came on and immediately worried Fingleton, whom lie bowled in bis first over. In the next over Bradman, intending a hard drive, was easily- caught at second slip. The score then was three for do, and the innings had been ill progress 55 minutes.

Badcock and Hassett took up a heavy task and Hassett gave a bright exhibition of cutting and glancing. Nutter was bowling admirably but Wilkinson was punished badly', and the batsmen restored the position to something more normal, adding 55 in 45 minutes. The hundred appeared in hours. Badcock had a narrow escape when 50, snicking a ball near the wicketkeeper. A drizzle began in the middle of the afternoon and Phillipson and N itter kept tlie batsmen on the defensive. Rain stopped play at 2.45 till 4.45 o'clock when the light was dim and the wicket more difficult, but the bowlers were handicapped for want of a firm foothold. Badcock, when 84, reached the 1000 runs on the tour Two hundred took three hours and Hassett at 69 was missed, Wilkinson failing to hold a hard low return with the left hand. Badcock batted for two and a half hours before he was dismissed and he hit seven fours.

The light improved and Hassett became lively, punishing anything short. Chipper field batted poorly for twenty minutes and ram stopped Play. Detailed scores were:
