ROAD SAFETY.
NEW ZEALAND'S POSITION. Though safety propaganda and the Government’s campaign against Hie delinquent motorist are a recent development in New Zealand, the Dominion, nevertheless, has the proud position.of being top of the worlds list for the smallness of fatal highway accidents in relation to the number of motor-vehicles on the roads. In second and third positions are South Africa and Canada. At the other end of the list are Germany and Italy. Britain is in middle position. . The figures for nine countries listed. as regards automobile deaths per 10,000 motor vehicles, are : New Zealand 7.4 South Africa : Canada p-0 Denmark 12.5 United States 13.6 Australia 13.9 Engl a nd-W ales 30.6 Germany 46.6 Italy * 09.4 These returns, which are the latest bearing on the international aspect of tlie safety problem, were produced by Mr G. Bland, chief traffic? inspector of the Auckland C ity Council, last week, as evidence of the generally high standard ot skill and care of Dominion motorists.
