PAHIATUA BOWLING CLUB.

THE ANNUAL REPORT. THE YEAR IN REVIEW. The following annual report was read by the secretary (Mr G. W. Chatwiu) at the annual meeting of the Pahiatua Rowling Club on Saturday night: “Before proceeding with the operations of the 1936-37 season, your committee very sincerely regret that they have to remind you that the club has sustained very serious losses and that the life membership of the club has been very seriously depleted by the deaths since our last of three of the oldest and most esteemed of our life members, namely, Messrs J. Hughes, T. F. Hewat and W. Mcßratney. “By the balance-sheet attached hereto you will see that the club had another very successful year financialally. This is due in no small measure to the fact that once again •every member has met his financial obligations to the club and. to the car© with which your committee administered the funds. The financial year opened with a credit balance of £3l 5s 3d and closed with one of £l3 12s 4d, which looks on the sur r face like a decrease of £l7 12s lid, but when the last balance-sheet was drawn up your committee was faced with the expenditure of over £29 for re-kerbing the whole green and that has left an asset of considerably more value than the apparent decrease. Once again the treasurer wishes to thank the members for the prompt payment of their subscriptions, and particularly to those who paid at the very beginning of the season as that is the time when cash is most needed.

“The 1936-37 season was again not particularly favourable for bowling, but despite this fact all the competitions were brought to a successful conclusion, and in this respect the thanks of the club are due to the members of the competition committee, Messrs P. Walsh, W. J. Mills and R. Gregory.

“The usual top-dressing ol the green was carried out at the end of the season by a very willing and energetic body of volunteers under the able guidance of the chairman of the green committee (Mr J- E. Murphy). “The club is again indebted to several members of the club for trophies tor the season and these were

allocated as follows: The patron's (Mr O. H. Arrow) for the senior singles, the president’s (Mr W. BritInncl) for the junior singles, Messrs Murphy and nodd’s for the senior pairs, Messrs Russell and Gregory’s lor the senior-junior pairs, Mr W. J. Mills and the club’s for the junior pairs, and Mr E. H. Lett's for the runner-up in the senior singles. These trophies were won as follows: Senior singles, Mr G. Kershaw; junior singles, Mr R. H. Taylor; senior pairs, Messrs G. L. Chatwin and R. Pilkinton; senior-junior pairs, Messrs H. R. Ogg and R. Pilkinton ; junior pairs, Messrs H. R. Ogg and C. M. Wright; runner-up senior singles, Mr R. Pilkinton. Your committee wishes to congratulate these gentlemen on their success. “The club was represented at the

annual competition for the Ruahine Pennants, and this year had the reverse success to wliat they had last jear, namely, they won the junior but were not successful in retaining the senior. “We had a fine day for our opening, which proved most successful in every way. The club was especially lucky in having so many ladies present. and""we are indebted to them for their interest. “During the season home and home visits were paid to and by the Oroua, Terrace End and J)annevirke clubs. Woodvilie visited us but our visit to them was cancelled on account of very heavy rain. We were also represented at the official opening of all our neighbours We were represented at the veterans’ tournament and our rink was successful in qualifying but were defeated in the play-off'. “We took part in many games for the various cups and shields, but were successful in retaining only the Byrne Cup, which we did after some ■v ery interesting games. “We were represented at the Centre s visit to Wellington by one rink, and to Wairarapa by two. “A gala day was held on our green on .January 16tli, when the Palmerston North, Feilding, Northern Manawatu. Terrace End, Oroua and Tnknr<> clubs ironi the other side of the. ranges, and all the clubs on this side were represented, but tlie conclusion of the games was spoiled by

heavy rain setting in. “We were represented at the Centre s Faster tournament and the rink skipped by Mr G. Kershaw qualified aml won one game in tin* post-section play.

“I ho thanks of the club are duo to the ladies who assisted on the opening day and on other occasions, indeed to all the ladies who at any time graced the green by their presence, to all tin* members who did so much work on or about the green, and to tin* Pahiatua. Herald for much valued space for publicity. “In conclusion your committee hopes that the 1937-38 season will In* as successful and enjoyable as, and more propitious a* regards weather tlian, the last, and that their successors will have as pleasant a time and as easy a task as they have had.”
