Only the delay m providing accommodation chiefly because of the difficulty of securing timber from tin* West Coast has been lesponsible for the relatively smah number of men starting work on the South Islaud Main Trunk railwav according to a statement made this morning by Hon. .A! r Sc mple. Mr Semple .said that shout 350 men were now employed and 190 of them were at the south end There would be no further delav he said. The e ngineers had accommodation available and the* numbers would he- increased week hv week until tin* maximum n 400 at. the south end was- reached. A maximum of 800 would he employed Five hundred nu n were now employed on the* Gi.* borne line but that would he increased to between 1 ! :.) and 1200.
