LONDON WOOL SALES.
FIRMING IN CROSSBREDS. STRONG COMPETITION. LONDON, July 17. The wool sales concluded to-day, when 11,29*3 bales were offered, including 5272 New Zealand, and 9894 sold. There was" a moderate selection, with keen competition, a good clearance being effected. New Zealand slipe halfbred lambs, “TBS over Canterbury,*’ made 17d highest and 15d average. Throughout the series bales were offered, and 72,000 were sold. The Home trade bought 42,000 and the Continent 30,000. Held over, 45,000 bales, of which 37,00 were not offered. Total New Zealand sales were approximately 35,000 bales; Australian, 27,000. A few' clays before the sales commenced a noticeable improvement was recorded throughout the trade. Consequently strong competition, especially from Home and German buyers, resulted, the series opening at a higher level than was anticipated. Later Russian competition came in and so stimulated the market that an upward movement resulted in some eases. The selection was fully representative. . Greasy Merinos opened at par to 5 per cent, lower, and finished at 5 per cent. up. Short faulty styles are now barely 5 per cent, lower than at last series. Good scoureds were favoured by the Russians, and were 5 per cent. up. Short faulty were almost at par. Fine crossbreds sold throughout at 5 per cent, decline. Medium to coarse fluctuated, but with the withdrawal of Russian buying they finished at par to 5 per cent, above the May rates.
