Lt would seem from certain activities in which the police were engaged yesterday that the undergraduate' sense of htunoiir at the University of Otago is not nearly as keen as it has been fashionable to suppose In the present instance, what was apparently designed as a practical joke will have a serious sequel to-day. when certain undergraduates appear in the City Police Court. It all began with a bogus message conveyed to police headquarters by telephone, to the effect that a prominent figure in academic and ecclesiastical circles had been murdered. Official inquiries at once commenced. and the alleged victim, was wakened out of sleep to make an appearance which established beyond doubt the erroneous nature of the report. Only the scantiest information could be gleaned last night about what has all the appearance of being a particularly senseless hoax. But it may be conjectured that the perpetrators had reckoned without the charges that will be preferred against them this morning.
