The Pahiatua Herald PUBLISHED EVERY EVENING FRIDAY FEBRUARY 14, 1936. TIRADE AGAINST ENGLAND.
Every now and then the Italian newspapers blazon forth with a fresh tirade against England., and the start of the anti-British Press propaganda began away back in October last year when Mussolini denounced the proposed economic siege as “a disgrace to civilisation which Italy would resist with indomitable wall and supreme contempt. ’ ’ Events followed fast after this, and students and youthful fascists marched through the streets of Home, demonstrating against English shops and restaurants. The exclusion of the London Daily Telegraph then followed when ii Duce took exception to the latter journal (said to be the mouthpiece of Mr Anthony Eden), owing to its attacks oil Italian policy matters. To counter the sanctions Professor Guarnieii, Italy’s economic dictator and expert, set up a plan of organisation and retrenchment, which involved curtailing the use of certain foods and the observance or two meatless days weekly and many other restrictions Hotels were ordered to serve but one meat dish—beef, mutton or pork—and a house to house inventory was taken of food stocks. The early success achieved by the capture of Adowa made the populace rejoice, and forget the price they were paying to whet Mussolini’s appetite for conquest, but as the country began to feel the pinc-h, caused by the sanction’s net that had been enveloped around Italy, further antagonism was directed towards England as being the cause of the opposition against 11 Due© and his plans. The latest complaint levelled against England now is that she has been supplying the AbyssfiiTans with bullets. If there happened to be any truth In the clarm, it does not make England out to be any worse than Austria for the latter country has reaped a golden harvest out of Italy by the supply of materials suitable for war purposes, the Austrian exports to Italy reaching an excess of 250,000 tons over the same period iu the previous year. Moreover Austria's dealings with Italy are being conducted in opposition to the League’s sanction articles. However Italy does not care two hoots who she deals with, and has now opened a trade with Jugo-slavia, a country with which she was none too friendly disposed towards before the Abyssinian campaign began.
