THE OIL SANCTIONS.
CANADA’S POSITION. (R <*c t i ved 11.30 a.m.) United Press Assn.—By Electric Telegraph—Cop v right. OTTAWA, February J2. New information concerning Canada's position regarding the oil sanctions at Geneva was put before the House of Commons defending the Government’s action in repudiating a suggestion at Geneva that Canada was taking a lead in oil sanctions. The Premier said Lord Riddell had no right to suggest or vote for the sanctions without instructions. When Lord Riddell made the proposal to the League a cable was already on the way directing him to take no stand, but it reached him too late. The full story of the incident is not yet told, said the Premier. When it is. he believed it will be shown that the Government’s repudiation averted war. All Europe might now be aflame had not the Government acted immediately.
