COUNTRY ROADS.

AKITIO COUNTY WORK. ENGINEER’S REPORT. At the monthly meeting of the Akitio County Council held on Monday, the engineer (Mr A. Maylin Theed) reported as follows: J 5 roken weather in early part of period caused much lost time and | the extraordinary storm on Febru- j ary 2nd was responsible nor heavy ! damage throughout the County, par- ( ticularly in coastal area. I append a special report on flood damage. Pongaroa—Eketahuna Alain High- i way: Metal repairs were in hand, j 53 cubic yards ex Akaroa and 15 j cubic yards of shingle ex Tiraumea being delivered. Grader outfit raked in metal to Huia Junction. Pongaroa—-Weber Alain Highway: General repairs were in hand, tabling and clearing of bluffs was done, also surface repairs. Eighty cubic yards of Akaroa metal was delivered and some shingle ex Akitio River. Bridges Nos. 4 and 7 were tarred and No. 9 repaired. Pongaroa—Pahiatua Alain Eiighway : Sur face repair * tabling and minor slip clearing was done, -30 cubic yards of Akaroa metal and some Afakuri shingle was delivered. Jii rn a Alai ri Highway: Del ive ry o i repair metal was in hand and 86£ cubic yards ex Akaroa was spread. Delivery of shingle ex Alakuri was also in hand. Repairs to large culvert were completed and some filling will now be done here. Pongaroa—Akitio Alain Highway : General repairs were in hand and repair metal as follows was delivered—ex Akaroa 17 cubic yards, ex portable crusher 98 cubic yards. Bridge No. 32 was cleaned and tarred on tops of trusses, struts, etc.—Cr. Hall reported that the sheathing at this bridge was loose. Cr. Gray said he had also noticed that the shingle was eating into the piles of the bridge, but the engineer said the shingle was taking only the sap off. Cr. Hall again remarked that the sheathing was loose and said this should have been attended to when the man was tarring the tops of the trusses. The engineer explained that the man was not told to do this and Cr. Hall asked if it was necessary to always tell a man every little thing to do. The engineer said the man had been told to tar the trusses and before he had time to do more he was taken away on another job. Glenora Road : Cutting back of slip butts, tabling and surface repair was in hand and new metal was trimmed. Soldier's Road: Some repairs were done and new metal attended to. Akitio River Road : Clearing o: slips and bluffs was in hand anc spoil was carted out for widening Surface repair was done. Decking on Waterman's Bridge No. -52 was temporarily repaired. Waihi Akitio Road: Tabling, surface repair and cleaning of culverts was done. Waihi Valley Road: Cuttings and tables were cleared and 71 cubicyards of rock delivered on Oporae end. Towai Road : A further 31 yard# of rotten rock was delivered and surface work done. North Range Road: Metalling contractor started work but has been much delayed. Excellent progress was made while road was dry. Several pipe culverts are required. Waipatakaka Road: Sur ace work was done. Alanuhara Road: Filling was completed at large culvert and is ready for metalling. Tabling was in hand. —Cr. Hall reported that a culvert was blocked and a corner required attention on this road. This reminded Cr. Whitta that a culvert on his road had a hole in it. The engineer said he would have them attended to. The engineer then said there was some metal to go on the Range Road and he had had a proposition put to him that morning which he wishm ed to Lay before the Council. The Council had intended using the fine limestone, discarding the nig boulders, but the settlers had offered to get sufficient hard stone out of the creek for crushing which would lx? much better for the job. The chairman asked if the cost of getting the stone-crusher taken to the Range Road would be very heavy. Cr. Whitta then moved that the matter be left in the hands of the engineer. This was seconded by Cr. Hunter and carried. Continuing, the engineer reported on the Kaituna Road where surface work had been done. Cr. Hail reported that a settler oil this road had advised him that the poplars were all growing tud suggested that this work be continued when the planting season came round. Kaituna Road: Surface work was done. Hwia-Iti Road: Same tables were opened. Range Road: Approaches to small bridge were in hand. Cross Road: Bridge No. 67 was cleaned and upper surfaces tarred. Huia Hoad: Grass verges and shoulders were cut and surface smoothed by grader outfit. A further six cubic yards of Akaroa metal was delivered. Waihoki Road: Graders cleared tables and shaped surface on clay portion. Nine cubic yards of Tiraumea shingle was delivered on metalled section. Overhanging growth is being cut back. Waikereru Road: Graders cut grass shoulders where necessary. Waiowaka Road: Tables were cleared, rubble cut across and surface trimmed by grader outfit. Spur Road : Graders are now on this road. A start was made with repair metalling, three cubic yards being delivered. Sugar JLoaf Road : Dow places were raised with rotten rock and papa and tables cleared. Delivery of metal is in hand, 33 cubic? yards having been spread. Marainanga Road: Tables* clearing of slip butts and surface repair was in hand and 63 cubic yards of rotten rock was delivered for repair.

Aohanga Hoad: General repairs j were in hand and GO cubic yards ot ; crushed rock ex portable crusher was delivered. GENERAL. Plant: Trac tor and White hoist was completely overhauled. Commerce truck is out ot action with brake trouble. Akaroa quarry: A reduced gang are keeping metal requirements up and a fair stock of spa lied rock is on hand. Concrete metal was crushed for various works in hand. Bridges: Contractors for Kohiku and Ware Ware bridges have commenced work and piles .ire being cast for former. Contractor for Meech’s culvert expects to start to-day. County offices: Contractor has made' a good start and his shifted old offices. Foundations tor new building are in hand. A councillor reported that the concrete ford on Range Road had been too deep recently for a pony and school children to cross. A-'ter some discussion on possible ways to improve this, it was decided to leave it in the hands of the engineer.
