Between 40 and 50 glass domes covering wreaths on graves at O’Neill’s Point cemetery, Bayswatcr. Auckland, have been broken by vandals. The damage, which is estimated at approximately £IOO, is believed to have been caused wilfully by boys who probably used stones to break the glass. Only two or three of the cavers in the Roman Catholic portion of the cemetery escaped damage. The rest in this area were smashed as were a few in other parts of the cemetery.
The new headmaster of the Wanganui Collegiate School, Mr F. W. Gilligiun, with his wife and three children arrived at Wellington in the Rangitane from London last night. H© said lie had already heard a great deal about New Zealand from collegiate old boys and from his brother Harold who captained the M.C.C team in the Dominion in 1931-35. He preferred not to discuss education and his plans for the school until he had first learned something cif education arid its aspirations in New Zealand. Mr Gilligan mentioned having seen the recent All Blacks match with Oxford which he described as most exciting and the best Rugliy niatch he had ever seen.
Members of the Women’s Division ot the Farmers’ Union held a very successful shop afternoon yesterday, and disposed of their entire stock of various household commodities ?n very short time. Three competitions were held during the afternoon, and these wen- won b.v Miss Gibson, Hallanee (dinner) ; Mrs T. Devoy (child’s frock); and Mrs Heckler (cake). Those assisting were Mesdames J. D. Piper, David Crewe, Gilbert, Bromner, Gibson, Harris, Holdaway, Day and Smith. Up to date the Pahiatua branch of the division lias distributed £6O for needy cases to help paywages of bush housekeepers and yesterday's shop will considerably- augment til© finances of the- community chest which has so many calls made on it throughout the year.
