HIGHWAY UNDER WATER. Electric Telegraph—Press Association OTAKI, This Day. The torrential downpour of rain, /extending ever last week resulted in ail streams and rivers in the district flooding. At Otnki the water covered the main highway, threatening a serious block of traffic but after reaching a, depth of 18 inches had receded late last evening to> six inches, but had risen again this morning to eighteen inches. The Manawatu is pouring through the northern bank aud threatens the highway at the Wirckinc bridge. If the rain continues many farms of a swampy nature are threatened. Forty acres of a 70-acre property at Knku being covered with water. The Ohau river rose rapidly and a party of trampers had a singular experience in negotiating usually dry flats by rope through over three feet of flood water. The rainfall recorded for the week is nearly four inches and it is still raining, but having a beneficial effect on spring pastures.
