IN THE HOUSE.
BUSINESS SPEEDED UP. SUPPLEMENTARY ESTIMATES. Finance was the outstanding feature of a. very full programme yesterday in the House of Kepresenta-t-ives. It, came into prominence toward the end of a long Parliainen-tai-y day, and took the form first of Supplementary Estimates and later the shape, rather bulky, of a second Finance Bill, representing a. kind of "washing-up” financial measure. G lll estimates contained proposals for an additional expenditure of close on £650,000 by the Government this financial year. A substantial portion of the sum represented moie money for education (iiicludin* > a grant of £3500 lor free kindergartens) , defence and the increases in the salaries of State servants in every department. Legislative work during the day bore the characteristic marks of enc -ot-session activity. Numerous Hills were put through crucial stages and passed with a quick ease which would have been impossible even a few weeks ago. No fewer than ten Bills went through the legislative mill, this achievement clearing the order paper of Government measures.
Til© Legislative Council shared in the quick work and the overtime, showing a rare patience in pursuit of the output of the Lower House. Indeed, the “elder statesmen” began their final sitting for the day well after 10 p.m. Their tally of enactments was something like a record.
